Do Flock cameras record audio or video?

2 min readGuide

Flock Safety offers separate plate-reader, video-camera and audio-detection products. A plate-reader location alone does not establish video or audio recording; identify the devices and enabled features at that site.

The brand is not a complete equipment description

The vendor's FAQ describes LPR capture as still photographs. Its product catalog separates plate readers, video cameras and gunshot/audio detection. The video page describes live and recorded video, and says video and LPR devices can share a pole. Identifying one unit at a mounting location is therefore not a complete inventory of the site.

Use the table to frame a local inquiry. A record for an LPR should not silently become evidence of a microphone, and an answer about the LPR should not be treated as an answer about every other device nearby.

Always analyzing is different from always storing

Flock's audio explanation says sensors analyze short rolling windows on the device, discard nonqualifying audio, and retain encrypted clips for qualifying events. It also describes limited scheduled diagnostic samples. A summary that says only 'not always recording' leaves the processing and diagnostic distinction unexplained.

The company says the product does not interpret speech or identify voices and does not provide a live audio feed. Those are vendor statements, not an independent inspection of your local equipment or a guarantee about everything a retained event clip might contain. Ask for the relevant configuration and policy before making a local claim.

Ask for an inventory and settings, not a yes-or-no slogan

Begin with the operator, location and period you are researching. Request the existing inventory, device model names, enabled video or audio features, retention rules, access roles and any diagnostic-sampling policy. Distinguish a purchase authorization from evidence that the feature is deployed and enabled.

If an answer covers only plate readers, follow up on video feeds and sound sensors separately. Preserve unknowns as unknowns. A missing document does not prove the absence of a microphone, and a broad contract that mentions audio does not prove recording at every camera site.

For a concrete example, Hidden Hills' September 30, 2026 FAQ names its Falcon cameras, describes still-image capture and distinguishes them from the community association's gate and speeding cameras. That is a city statement about its own system, not an independent inspection or a rule for other cities.

Please provide the current device inventory for [location], identifying LPR, video and audio equipment separately. For each, please provide the enabled capture features and existing policies covering retention, authorized access and diagnostic sampling.

A mapped device is a research starting point

FlockDetour can show the device classification and source information recorded in its map data. It cannot open an audio feed, play event clips or inspect an operator's software settings. Other camera brands and separately classified audio sensors also appear in the dataset; not every pin is a Flock device.

Check the record's source and report a documented classification error through the contribution process. Keep an equipment correction separate from a claim about captured conversations or footage, which needs evidence from the responsible operator.

Questions people ask

Does every Flock plate reader have an audio detector?
A plate-reader record does not establish an audio detector. Flock markets separate audio equipment; check the site's actual inventory and configuration.
Does 'not recording continuously' mean no sound is processed?
No. Flock's audio explanation describes ongoing on-device sound analysis, event-clip retention and limited diagnostic sampling. Processing and retention are separate questions.
