HOW IT WORKS

Your next trip, with more context.

Three steps between you and a route with fewer known readers.

Find the cameras

Search your area and open a camera pin to check its type, source and available direction data.

See the tradeoff

Compare travel time and documented camera sites on the web map. Pick the balance that works for your trip.

Take it on the road

Use the iPhone or Android app for turn-by-turn guidance. Follow posted signs and current road conditions, even when they differ from the map.

MAKE THE TRADEOFF VISIBLE

A few more minutes. Fewer known cameras.

A detour is only useful if you know what it changes. Compare the extra travel time with the number of documented camera sites on each route. The fastest option stays visible, so the choice stays yours.

WHAT YOU GET

From planning to the road.

Start with the free web map. Add driving tools with the iPhone or Android app.

Compare your options

See the fastest route alongside an alternative with fewer known readers when one is available. Web route comparison is free; in-app routing requires FlockDetour Pro.

  • Free web comparison
  • Known-site counts
  • Clear travel times

Proximity alerts

Optional app alerts can warn about nearby documented cameras. Delivery depends on your connection, permissions and device settings.

Offline map areas

Save base map and cached camera data for low-signal browsing. Live routes and proximity lookups still require a connection.

Turn-by-turn guidance

See and hear maneuver prompts after you set a route, including screen-off guidance when permissions and the operating system allow it.

Report a camera

Submit what you observed for private internal review. Reports never change the public map automatically, and publication has no promised timeline.

OPEN DATA

Every pin should have a source.

The camera layer starts with open community data — OpenStreetMap contributors, public records, and published research — and grows through corrections and in-app reports that begin private and can affect the map only after internal review. There is no promised publication timeline. Accepted open-data corrections can flow back out under open licenses so the wider ecosystem improves too.

Questions about Flock cameras?
Start with the evidence.

FlockDetour is an independent map and research resource. We are not affiliated with Flock Safety and do not provide surveillance footage or license-plate searches.

A camera count is not a Flock count. Flock Safety is one vendor. Our map includes other camera types, and documented locations are not complete coverage.

THE REPORTING

Look beyond the camera on the pole.

Watch independent reporting on the camera network, its operators and the questions it raises. Then explore our source-linked news and local agency records to investigate your own area.

COMMON QUESTIONS

A few things to know before you go.

Does FlockDetour guarantee I will avoid every camera?
No. FlockDetour reduces exposure to cameras documented in its current data. It cannot identify every camera, guarantee avoidance, or ensure a route is surveillance-free.
Where does the camera data come from?
Open community data — OpenStreetMap contributors, public records, and published research — plus private in-app reports that can affect the public map only after internal review. There is no promised report-publication timeline. Core Flock-tagged OpenStreetMap coverage refreshes weekly.
Is FlockDetour affiliated with Flock Safety?
No. FlockDetour is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Flock Safety or any surveillance vendor. Flock Safety is a specific vendor; ALPR is the broader technology used by multiple vendors. Our map also includes other camera types, identified separately.
Is it legal to route around ALPR cameras?
FlockDetour compares routes on the road network. Always follow posted restrictions, traffic laws and current road conditions; a suggested route is not legal advice.
Can I just cover my license plate instead?
FlockDetour does not recommend obscuring a plate, tampering with cameras or interfering with public infrastructure. It helps compare routes. Check the rules that apply where you drive and keep your plate readable.
How long do police keep the data from these cameras?
There is no single retention period you can infer from a camera on a pole. Check the operating agency's current policy, contract and applicable law, including exceptions for evidence preservation. Our agency directory links to public records so you can investigate the local policy.
Do plate readers still work at night or in bad weather?
Yes. Infrared illumination is standard on fixed readers, so darkness isn't an obstacle — that faint glow is the IR array. Heavy rain, snow, glare and road grime all reduce accuracy, but weather is a degradation, not a defense.
What do the iPhone and Android apps add over the web map?
The web map is free and needs no account: browse and search documented cameras, inspect their sources and plan a route with travel time and camera counts. The iPhone and Android apps add Pro turn-by-turn navigation and the Balanced and Fewer cameras route modes. Routing in the apps is FlockDetour Pro; on this site the route planner is free. Alerts, offline features and vehicle-display support vary by platform and release; check the current store listing.
