ALPR detector apps: what Flock Alert and similar apps actually do

2 min readGuide

ALPR detector apps such as Flock Alert do not sense cameras. They compare your GPS position with a map of reported readers and warn you when one is near. That means they miss unmapped and mobile cameras. Flock Alert lists itself as free on iOS.

A map plus GPS, not a radio detector

Flock Alert's own page describes a live map of documented cameras, proximity alerts while driving, a route planner that opens Apple or Google Maps, and one-tap reporting. Its App Store page lists it as free with optional in-app donations, version 1.4.2 dated September 24, and no ratings overview yet. We read both on October 24, 2026.

Because alerts come from the map, an alert only fires for a camera someone reported. A silent app is not proof a road is clear. No map lists every camera, and none of these tools can promise a route that avoids all of them. Mobile and unmapped readers never show up on any of them.

Alerts tell you after you chose the road

A proximity alert fires as you approach. A route planner changes the road before you leave. FlockDetour's Pro navigation uses mapped cameras to offer alternatives; FlockDetour's map and web planner are free. As of October 3, 2026, the US App Store listed Pro at $4.99 a month, $39.99 a year or $49.99 once; prices differ by country and store and were not rechecked on October 24.

Not from the sources we read. These apps rely on a database of reported locations.
Are ALPR detector apps legal?
This is not legal advice. Check your state's rules; the apps describe themselves as transparency tools.
