What happens when a city cancels Flock cameras?
Check four separate outcomes: when use stops, when the agreement ends, when equipment is removed, and what happens to existing records. A cancellation announcement alone does not confirm all four.
Identify the action and responsible agency
A city council, sheriff and neighborhood association are different operators. Name the organization covered by the decision, the product involved and the effective date. Do not expand a single agency's announcement into a claim about every camera in the surrounding city or county.
El Paso County's sheriff announced on September 30, 2026 that use would stop immediately and that the office would send a nonrenewal notice and request equipment retrieval. The release does not confirm completed removal or data deletion. Those missing outcomes need separate evidence.
Preserve the announcement date alongside the event date. If a later meeting changes the plan, link the later record rather than quietly treating an earlier proposal as the final outcome. A camera's presence, service status and ownership can require different sources.
Use this checklist before saying the cameras are gone
Build a short timeline with a source for each stage. When a stage is unknown, write 'not confirmed' instead of filling the gap from another stage. An instruction to collect hardware is useful evidence of intent, but a collection record or dated operator confirmation is stronger evidence of completion.
For records, distinguish ordinary captures, evidence preserved for an incident, exports, accounts and audit logs. Ask which policies govern each. A service end date does not establish that every copy of every record was deleted that day.
Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
| Outcome | Useful confirmation | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Use stops | Operator confirmation with effective time and covered devices | Hardware has been collected |
| Agreement ends | Operative notice, acknowledgment and term dates | Every subscription or nearby operator is covered |
| Hardware removed | Dated retrieval record or location-specific confirmation | Historic records were deleted |
| Records handled | Retention, preservation and transition records | No independent copy or evidence export exists |
Check the actual exit terms
Flock's pricing FAQ describes nonrenewal offboarding involving equipment removal and data transition. This general description is not a removal schedule, deletion certificate or substitute for a particular agreement. Obtain the operative terms and any written instructions between the parties.
Ask whether authorized users can still sign in, whether sharing remains enabled, and which records are retained after service ends. Request existing documents rather than expecting the operator to create a new technical report. If an answer is limited to one device or one record category, keep that limit visible.
A follow-up can be narrow: identify the camera location, request the removal date and ask what existing record confirms it. This often produces a clearer research question than a broad demand to prove the entire area is free of surveillance.
For [agency's decision/date], please provide the nonrenewal or termination notice, effective service-end date, records confirming equipment retrieval at [locations], and existing instructions covering account closure, sharing, retained evidence and data transition.

Map changes need location-specific evidence
FlockDetour's documented locations do not provide live operational telemetry. A pin may reflect a sourced installation record without establishing whether the device is currently active. Conversely, a missing pin is not proof that no camera exists.
For a correction, include the location, operator, date and a link to evidence. Describe an announced shutdown as a shutdown announcement; describe confirmed removal only when the source supports that outcome. Do not infer a camera-free route from a single cancellation story or alter a record for another operator nearby.
