Does Google Maps or Waze show Flock cameras? MapQuest now does

2 min readGuide

Google Maps and Apple Maps do not show Flock license plate cameras, and Waze lumps them in with other police cameras. MapQuest added a surveillance layer in October 2026 that marks known readers on the map but does not route around them. FlockDetour adds camera-aware routes.

Mainstream map apps compared on Flock cameras

ZDNET reported that Google Maps and Apple Maps do not show Flock camera locations, and that Waze identifies 'police cameras' without separating speed cameras and traffic cameras from surveillance readers. MapQuest is the exception: its new surveillance layer draws known license plate readers as a red eye with a vision cone.

MapQuest told Yahoo Tech the layer can identify Flock, Axon, Motorola Solutions and PlateSmart cameras, among others. ZDNET found no setting yet to route around the cameras. MapQuest did not say where its locations come from. No map lists every camera, and none of these tools can promise a route that avoids all of them. Mobile and unmapped readers never show up on any of them.

Seeing a camera is not the same as routing around it

A layer tells you where a reader was reported. A camera-aware route changes the road you drive. FlockDetour's web planner shows the fastest route and any alternatives with a count of mapped cameras on each, and its Pro mobile modes use the same data for turn-by-turn directions. FlockDetour's map and web planner are free. As of October 3, 2026, the US App Store listed Pro at $4.99 a month, $39.99 a year or $49.99 once; prices differ by country and store and were not rechecked on October 24.

A lower count is a count of mapped cameras, not a guarantee. Some trips have no alternative, and the shorter detour is sometimes only a block away. Treat the number as a comparison between two roads on one map.

Questions people ask

Can Google Maps show Flock cameras?
Not as a built-in layer, according to ZDNET's October 2026 report. Third-party maps such as DeFlock or FlockDetour show reported camera locations.
Does Waze warn about Flock cameras?
Waze flags 'police cameras', which ZDNET says covers ordinary traffic cameras too, so a Flock reader is hard to pick out.
Does MapQuest route around Flock cameras?
Not yet. ZDNET said the layer only shows where cameras are, and you avoid them on your own.
Where does MapQuest get its camera locations?
MapQuest did not say. ZDNET guessed crowdsourced data such as OpenStreetMap, which is a guess, not a statement from MapQuest.
Is a camera-aware route legal?
Choosing a different public road is legal. This page is not legal advice.
