How many Flock cameras are in the US?
On October 4, 2026, FlockDetour's map held 149,557 license plate reader locations in the United States, and 120,835 of them were attributed to Flock Safety by their source. California had the most, with 21,970. These are mapped records from public sources, not an official inventory, so treat them as a documented count rather than an exact census.
The count, and what it measures
We counted every public plate-reader record in the FlockDetour database on October 4, 2026, leaving out sites marked as removed. That gave 149,557 in the United States and 595 in Canada. A record counts as a Flock camera only when its source names Flock Safety as the vendor: 120,835 in the US, or 81% of the total.
The other 28,722 US records are plate readers from other vendors, such as Motorola Solutions, Genetec or Axon, or have no vendor recorded. Some of the unlabeled ones are probably Flock cameras, so the Flock figure is a floor for what is on the map, not a ceiling for what is on the road.
Three things push a mapped count away from the real number. Volunteers have not found every camera, and mobile readers on patrol cars never appear on a fixed map. Two sources can describe the same pole, which double-counts it until the records are reconciled. And a camera that was taken down stays on the map until someone reports it.
Flock cameras by state
California, Texas and Florida have the most mapped plate readers. The top five states hold 46% of the national total. Large states have large counts, so a high number is not the same as a high density.
The table lists every state and the District of Columbia. Each state page breaks its total down by city.

Why other sites give different numbers
DeFlock The USA's map showed 143,475 plate readers on October 4, 2026. ZDNET reported in July 2026 that public estimates put the number of Flock-branded cameras in the US at roughly 90,000, and that Flock says more than 12,000 customers use its products.
Our 120,835 Flock-attributed records sit above that 90,000 estimate. One reason is method: our database combines several public sources, and a camera listed in two of them counts twice until the records are merged. We publish the raw figure with that caveat rather than adjust it to match another estimate.
When you compare any two counts, check four things: whether they count all plate readers or only Flock, whether removed cameras are excluded, the date, and the boundary. A state total and a 10-mile city circle measure different areas.
Does Flock publish an official count?
We could not find a current national device count on Flock Safety's website. The company's public figures describe customers; ZDNET cites Flock saying more than 12,000 customers use its products. Individual agencies that run a Flock transparency portal often list how many cameras they own, and those figures are the closest thing to an official local count.
Portal figures cover only the agencies that publish them, so adding them up gives a number far below the mapped total. That is why the state pages show both: the mapped count, then the counts agencies disclose about themselves.

How many in Canada?
The map holds 595 plate reader records in Canada, and only 14 name Flock Safety. Many Canadian police services, Toronto's among them, use readers mounted on patrol cars, which a fixed-location map cannot show. A low Canadian count says little about how much plate reading happens there.
How we counted
We paged through every public plate-reader record in the database, dropped sites marked as removed, and placed each one inside a state or province using Natural Earth's public-domain boundaries. 2,187 records sat just outside a boundary line at that map scale, usually on a coast or a border crossing, and went to the nearest state. 353 records outside the US and Canada were left out.
The camera records come from OpenStreetMap contributors and published datasets. Our sources page lists each one with its license. We rerun the count before updating this page and change the date above when we do.

Find the cameras near you
A national number answers a curiosity question. The useful one is which cameras are on the roads you drive. Search your city in the directory, or open the map and zoom in on your route.
