The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado announced on September 30, 2026 that it would immediately discontinue using Flock Safety cameras. Its official release said the office would send a nonrenewal notice and ask Flock to retrieve the equipment.
This briefing was prepared October 4. The announcement is evidence of the sheriff’s decision and planned next steps. It is not a completed-removal report, a list of affected locations or confirmation that historic records were deleted.
What residents can verify next
The useful follow-up is a dated timeline. Identify the decision, the effective end of service, the contractual end date and the physical collection of each unit. Those stages can have different supporting documents. A notice to a vendor and a completed collection record answer different questions.
A focused records request could seek the operative nonrenewal notice, the vendor’s acknowledgment, the covered equipment list and existing retrieval records. If a reply covers only certain locations, preserve that limit. Do not turn a partial answer into a countywide statement about every operator.
Our guide to Flock cancellations and removal provides a four-stage checklist and request wording. For the financial question, the camera-cost guide explains why an annual charge, contract total and actual payment must be kept separate.
Existing records are a separate question
A shutdown announcement cannot resolve the handling of ordinary captures, preserved evidence, exports and search audit logs. Ask which retention and transition instructions apply to each record category. An unavailable document should be described as unavailable, rather than treated as proof of deletion.
The retention guide helps distinguish routine storage from records preserved for an investigation. This briefing does not determine what records an individual requester is entitled to receive.
What this means for a camera map
FlockDetour’s camera map contains documented locations; it does not receive live device-health or service-status information. A map entry cannot confirm that a unit is active, and its absence cannot confirm that no camera exists.
A useful map correction identifies the location, operator, date and supporting source. Describe an announced cessation of use as that announcement. Reserve “removed” for evidence that confirms removal at the relevant site. We have not independently verified equipment collection or account closure for this decision.
