FlockDetour vs FlockHopper: compare the trip and the feature split

6 min readGuide

FlockHopper advertises free camera-aware navigation on iPhone and Android, with a browser planner at DontGetFlocked. FlockDetour offers a free web map and planner, dated city and agency research, and paid mobile camera-aware navigation. Start with the trip and platform you need; our software observations do not establish a route-quality winner.

DontGetFlocked is FlockHopper's website

FlockHopper and dontgetflocked.com refer to the same product ecosystem, not two separate alternatives. Its store publisher is OpenRoad Labs LLC. FlockDetour is made by Block Browser INC and publishes this comparison, so we have a commercial interest in one side. Product statements were checked October 3, 2026. We distinguish developer descriptions, observed web results and features that have not been tested on a phone or vehicle display.

Separate free navigation from optional extras

FlockHopper's US iPhone and Android descriptions advertise free navigation. Its iPhone description calls the optional purchases tips that unlock nothing. There is an unresolved version distinction: its September 2026 privacy policy also describes Pro camera logs, map styles and traffic features. We have not independently confirmed those extras' current availability or prices. The supported conclusion is that free navigation is advertised; it would be too broad to promise every feature in every version is free.

FlockDetour's free website lets you inspect cameras and compare available routes with estimated time, distance and mapped counts. Mobile turn-by-turn navigation and camera-aware modes require Pro. Android's current listing includes a free fastest-route preview; the iPhone listing reviewed here describes routing as Pro. Read the feature split for your platform rather than treating web, Android and iPhone as identical releases.

On October 3, 2026, FlockDetour's US App Store page listed Pro at US$4.99 monthly, US$39.99 yearly or US$49.99 for a lifetime purchase. Monthly and yearly plans renew automatically. These are US iOS storefront prices, not a promise about Canadian, Android or future prices; check the purchase screen before buying.

If free mobile navigation is your deciding factor, FlockHopper is a sensible first product to evaluate. A paid plan is not evidence of better routes or better data. Consider FlockDetour Pro only after its supported navigation features, coverage in your area and purchase terms meet your needs. Both products let you begin your research without paying for a plan.

Our three-trip observation does not produce a winner

On October 3, we requested the same three pairs of public reference coordinates in FlockDetour and FlockHopper's web interfaces. For the Tampa trip, FlockDetour returned one modeled encounter with no lower-count candidate in the recorded run. FlockHopper displayed a direct option with two camera estimates and a privacy option with zero. For the Washington trip, both products' alternatives retained a count of one. These are the products' own calculations, not measurements of actual surveillance.

For the Atlanta example, FlockDetour's recorded result changed from two modeled encounters to zero with 46 additional estimated seconds. FlockHopper displayed one versus zero and rounded its route times to five versus six minutes. The underlying travel distances and baselines differed substantially, so subtracting these numbers across products would not be a fair performance comparison. The report preserves the endpoint coordinates and all outcomes, including where FlockDetour did not improve.

We did not normalize camera datasets, geometry, road costing, direction settings or scoring tolerances. We also did not drive the trips, time the journeys or test whether any plate was captured. An estimated zero means the product's calculation found no counted encounters under its inputs; it does not mean there are no cameras. Use the examples to inspect the tradeoffs and methodology, not to predict a guaranteed result for your commute.

Verify the experience on the device you will use

FlockHopper's website advertises CarPlay and Android Auto. Its iPhone release notes describe CarPlay, and its store descriptions list spoken directions and background navigation. Those are useful features to consider when you need a car-screen workflow. We have not tested their operation in a vehicle. This comparison makes no corresponding current vehicle-display promise for FlockDetour based on development code or an unreleased build.

Before relying on either app, evaluate the features that matter to your driving: whether a destination is correctly placed, whether the proposed entrance is usable, whether the turn instructions are clear, and what happens after a missed turn. Do that while parked or with a passenger handling the device. A polished preview or successful browser request does not establish real driving reliability, offline rerouting or compatibility with your head unit.

Look beyond the route line

FlockHopper attributes its camera locations to the DeFlock community and warns that unmapped and mobile readers are outside that coverage. FlockDetour combines OSM-derived locations with other public sources and moderated reports. Different inputs, import dates and classifications can change a displayed count. Neither a national headline total nor a vendor filter tells you whether every reader on a particular road is present and correctly located.

FlockDetour's website is useful when you also want to investigate the area: city snapshots show their radius, date and record samples, and the historical agency directory links original portals. Start with the Miami city page for a geographic snapshot or the Toronto report for the distinction between fixed records and mobile police readers. These pages help frame questions; they are not live agency inventories or evidence that a particular device is operating.

Read what each connected feature sends

FlockHopper's policy says route inputs reach its routing servers and are discarded after calculation. It also explains provider requests and local data, including an optional camera log described as a Pro feature. FlockDetour's policy explains that route and search inputs can reach its backend with a random installation identifier, while reports and purchases have their own handling. Neither description should be shortened to a claim that nothing ever leaves your phone.

These are published disclosures, not independent network or security audits. Review the current policy for the platform and features you enable. In particular, distinguish a server's route-request retention from local saved places, optional encounter history, map-provider requests and store purchase records. If you decide to change apps, review local deletion and subscription controls separately; installing a replacement does not itself migrate preferences or cancel a paid plan.

Compare one useful trip before committing

Choose FlockHopper for an initial evaluation when free mobile navigation or its advertised car-display support is central to your decision. Evaluate FlockDetour when you want its combination of camera records, local research and paid mobile navigation. You can keep using a competitor's map while reading our source reports; the research is public.

Begin with the same public origin and destination in both web tools, note the date and settings, and inspect the roads rather than only the camera number. Check local coverage and the actual store offer next. Neither this publisher-written comparison nor three software observations establishes a universal best app, a complete map or a camera-free route.

Questions people ask

Is DontGetFlocked a different app from FlockHopper?
No. DontGetFlocked is the website at dontgetflocked.com for FlockHopper, whose store publisher is OpenRoad Labs LLC.
Is FlockHopper free while FlockDetour costs money?
FlockHopper advertises free navigation. FlockDetour's map and web planner are free, while its mobile turn-by-turn and camera-aware modes require Pro. FlockHopper's policy also mentions optional Pro features; their current prices were not verified here.
Does FlockDetour avoid more cameras than FlockHopper?
Our observations do not establish that. The tools used different route baselines and their own camera estimates. FlockDetour had one lower-count outcome and two unchanged ones in its three recorded trips; that is not a controlled accuracy or driving benchmark.
Will either app work around every camera in Canada?
No complete coverage or avoidance claim is supported. Check mapped records, vendors and local sources for the area. Fixed map pins do not describe every mobile plate reader, and a blank map is inconclusive.
